A practical size for simple uploads
Fifty kilobytes is often enough for a recognizable headshot, profile image, listing photo, or small article thumbnail. It is much more forgiving than a 10 or 20 KB cap, but detailed photographs can still require a change in dimensions.
The best result usually comes from cropping away unused space, limiting the maximum long edge, and letting WebP reduce detail where the human eye is less likely to notice it.
Choose quality or dimensions deliberately
If the destination only requires a small display size, reducing the dimensions is the cleaner choice. A 900-pixel WebP at reasonable quality can look sharper on screen than a 2,000-pixel image compressed to the same byte count.
For an image that may be printed later, keep the original. The downloaded copy is a delivery file, not a replacement master.
Check compatibility
WebP is widely supported by modern browsers but some older application systems reject it. Select JPEG when the upload portal lists accepted formats and WebP is not included. The same 50 KB target will remain in effect.
Frequently asked questions
Is 50 KB enough for a profile photo?
Yes for many small avatars. Use a tight crop of the face and verify that the uploaded preview is still recognizable.
Can I keep the original width and height?
Yes up to the point where the target can still be reached. If it cannot, the compressor reduces dimensions automatically.
Does this preserve transparency?
WebP does. JPEG fills transparent pixels with white.
