Why 1280 × 720 matters
YouTube displays custom thumbnails in a widescreen card. A 1280 × 720 image matches that shape and provides enough resolution for desktop and mobile layouts. A square or vertical photo can be used, but it needs a deliberate crop or padding strategy.
This tool starts with the 1280 × 720 preset. Choose Fill and crop center for an edge-to-edge photograph, or Fit entire image when the full composition must be preserved.
Design for a small preview
The thumbnail is often seen at a fraction of its original size. Faces, a clear object, and a few large words communicate better than paragraphs of small text.
- Keep the subject in the central part of the frame.
- Use strong contrast between the subject and background.
- Check the result at mobile-card size before publishing.
Resize before compressing
Produce the 1280 × 720 layout first. If the final file is still large, run it through the compressor with a higher target such as 200 or 500 KB. The compressed copy can be uploaded separately after checking clarity.
